Transmitting the Faith

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. — Deuteronomy 6:4–5

The Shema prayer of Deuteronomy 6 expresses the fundamental belief in and commitment to the Jewish faith. This prayer captures the full spectrum of belief. It speaks of a God who communicated with His people, a God who rescued them from slavery. The Shema reminds people to seek and love God with their whole selves.

I learned to type in high school. That’s one of the best things I can say about that time.

High school was the four worst years of my life. It rewarded bad decisions, bad friends and bad behavior. For many of my peers, those were lawless, pointless years. Did I mention that I learned to type?

I went to my 40th high school reunion recently and was surprised to find delightful, friendly, thoughtful people. Where were these 50-something friends when I was 16?

Surprisingly Simple Laws of Youth Leadership

by Jason Boyer

llm_nov13_featureOne question comes up in virtually every phone call and roundtable discussion I have with youth pastors. Just last week I stood in a buffet line with a student ministries pastor when our conversation turned to the familiar inquiry: “What are you doing to develop student leaders?”

The question is thrown around all the time. It is a topic of conversation in megachurches with hundreds of students and endless programs. But it is equally discussed in the humble-size church without a developed youth ministry. In any setting big or small, we have an itch to fulfill our duty to grow new generations of leaders. The good news is that cultivating leadership among students can happen in a church of any size. Even better, it doesn’t necessarily mean having to add an additional program focused on targeting and training an elite group of teens. Here are a few simple principles I have found helpful for understanding how to nurture young leaders.

Sudafed Christianity

image

by Shane Raynor

A couple of years ago, I was dealing with a nasty cold, so I headed to my friendly neighborhood Walgreens for some Sudafed. This had been my over-the-counter decongestant of choice since college, and when I’d combined it with a decent antihistamine, I’d always been able to pretend I didn’t have a cold, even when I had a severe one. It just worked, and it worked well.

So I bought some Sudafed for my cold, started taking it, and… nothingMaybe this is just a weird cold, I thought. The symptoms just aren’t responding to what’s always worked in the past.

Then I read the box. Active ingredient: Phenylephrine. Wait, that can’t be right. Sudafed isn’t phenylephrine, it’s pseudoephedrine. That’s why it’s called Sudafed! Hello, McFly?

It Is Good to Give Thanks

It is Good to Give Thanks

It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High, proclaiming your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night. – Psalm 92:1-2

It’s 5:00 p.m. and the doorbell rings; that can only mean one thing, the play date is over.

I walked my friend through the house, out the back door, and into the yard where we heard the sound of laughter echo in the air. Leaves fell from the trees as our boys threw more into the sky. We watched as a flurry of red, yellow, and orange showered down on their little heads. I hated to interrupt the fun, but it was time.

“Can he stay just a little bit longer?”

“Can we have dinner together?”

“Can he come over tomorrow?”

After two hours of running and playing, our little guys were not ready to say goodbye. I walked our neighbors down the driveway despite the pleas for more time to spend together.

Clearly, we have not mastered the art of the graceful goodbye.

Sufficient Grace

by Mary Helen Gensch

“Your grace is sufficient for me” is a personal promise!

YOUR grace is sufficient for me – Immense, divine, all-knowing, mind-blowing, all-accepting!

Your GRACE is sufficient for me – 100% all-forgiving, covering, generous, undeserving gift!

Your grace IS sufficient for me – present, current, now!

Your grace is SUFFICIENT for me – meeting needs, content, enough, nothing more!

Your grace is sufficient FOR me – personalized, customized, purposed fit!

Your grace is sufficient for ME – human, imperfect, redeemed daughter!

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV

But I Have a Right To Be Angry

James 1:19

by Traci Miles

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. — James 1:19-20

I had been lied to, betrayed, and hurt. I was angry and felt I had every right to be. Anger crushed my desire to forgive. Although I’d asked God to fill my heart with mercy, I kept a running mental list of justifications for my anger that overrode my empty prayers.

My internal dialogue was one big argument.

Where Are The Fuzzy Animals?

A few weeks ago I shared bits and pieces of King David’s life in my sermon. If you missed it, it looked like this…

No, David’s life looks more like this: get told you’ll be king while still a boy, slay a goliath, join the king’s court, have the king suspect you for treason and try to kill you, marry his daughter, have the king try to kill you again, eventually become king, have enemies try to kill you, experience victory over enemies, see a pretty girl taking a bath, murder her husband, get caught, lose 4 sons, one of whom was trying to kill you and take over, even causing you to run for your life…

After the service, my kids came up to me and asked me about David being a murderer. In case you need to be     reminded, these are pastor’s kids.

Thanksgiving Countdown

by Traci LIttle

thanksgiving bible verses thanksgiving printable

You may have heard of advent countdowns to Christmas, but what about a countdown of Thanksgiving Bible verses for the month of November? Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays! It’s a time to give thanks to God for all the blessings of the year, and for all that God provides. And that is why this year I’m excited to partner with FaithGateway to give you a free printable of 28 Thanksgiving Bible verses!

As we approach Thanksgiving, you can use our 28 Thanksgiving scriptures to count down to the big day. Simply download the free Thanksgiving printable (PDF file), print it onto paper or card stock, and you’ll have Bibles Verses about giving thanks for every day between November 1-28. Our free Thanksgiving scriptures printable includes prompt questions for each day that you can also use for table conversation at breakfast or dinner with your family.

This is a great activity to teach your kids thankfulness not just one day of the year, but every day leading up to Thanksgiving! One thing you can do with your Thanksgiving scripture cards is turn over to the back of each card, and each day take turns writing something for which you are thankful. You can then make your own “Giving Thanks” or “Thanksgiving Blessings” jar!

Put your Thanksgiving Blessings jar in the middle of your family table or living room, and on Thanksgiving day, have your children take turns picking from the jar and read aloud all the blessings that were written throughout the month.

I pray that these Thanksgiving scriptures will help you read God’s Word and get your hearts and minds in a thankful place this season! Here’s a look at the first 7 days of Thanksgiving Bible verses, and be sure to get our free downloadable Thanksgiving printable for all 28 days.

Other Great Thanksgiving Resources for Kids

We have two books our family enjoys reading together this time of year that both celebrate the season and share a great message of God’s love for us:

  • The Pumpkin Patch Parable: This charming story for children illustrates how a loving farmer can turn a simple pumpkin into a simply glorious sight. In the same way, God’s transforming love can fill each of our hearts with joy and light.
  • A Pumpkin Prayer: Little ones will delight in the wonders of this special time of year and learn to be thankful to God for His blessings. Colorful pumpkins, crunching leaves, crisp breezes—celebrate the abundance of the harvest season through charming illustrations and sweet rhymes that are perfect for young hearts.
